Downsizing to a smaller home takes a lot of work.  This can be discouraging and sometimes frustrating to homeowners who are now faced with the prospect of having to sort through all of their possessions and get rid of many of them in order to fit into their new home. So what are some ways you can make the best of moving to a small home?

Make Up in Other Areas

Small homes may lend themselves more towards being cramped and cluttered than their larger counterparts, but that doesn't have to be the case. You can still make a small house look nice and modern. Try some techniques that make rooms look bigger to help open up your house. Focus on how things fit in a room proportionately. A nice, big rug that was perfect for your old living room might end up being too big for your new one, so you may need to swap it for one that fits better.

Get Creative with Space

Of course, one of the most common pain points when it comes to moving to a smaller home is not having enough space for your things. If you've already gotten rid of a lot of your things but still don't have enough space, it's time to get creative. You can use furniture pieces to store more items and save space. Some beds, for example, have drawers under them you can use to store clothes, bedding, or other belongings. Don't forget to take advantage of vertical space either. A lot of wall space often goes unused that could be utilized to keep your belongings close to hand.

Focus on the Positives

Your mental state will have a lot to do with how well you are able to make the best of your situation. To improve it, focus on the positives. Moving to a smaller house can save you both time and money. They are less difficult and costly to maintain than larger houses, just by virtue of there being less of it to take care of. Similarly, it will likely cost less to insure. You'll probably pay less in property taxes and utilities as well. Just think of what you can do with all that time you aren't spending cleaning a larger house and the money you aren't paying for it.

It can be easy to get discouraged about downsizing to a smaller house. There's nothing that says a small house can't make up for its size in other areas though. Make the most of your storage space and focus on the positives. You may find that you end up preferring your smaller house to the bigger one.
